Dobbies Garden Centre highlights new options for welcoming green indoors
Dobbies, the UK’s leading garden centre, is encouraging people to welcome botanical bliss inside with a new range of houseplants suitable for every area of your home.
Whether you’re looking to brighten up an empty corner, add a touch of green to your lounge, or create a spa vibe with plants in your bathroom, Dobbies’ Senior Houseplant Buyer, Claire Bishop, has suggestions on how to breathe new life into your home with plants. And with options starting from just £3.99, you can transform a space without breaking the bank.
When it comes to getting the most out of your houseplants and making an impact, Claire says: “Grouping together houseplants of different sizes, heights and textures will give you an eye-catching display and add wow factor to any empty corner or shelf. The Sansevieria, or snake plant, works well to add unique interest to displays and is low maintenance, making it ideal for beginner plant parents. Also great for home offices to boost mood and productivity when working from home, simply water fortnightly, or when the soil feels dry to the touch, and keep it in a bright spot for best results. Style your Sansevieria with other textured green plants for a fun look and feel.”
Bathrooms are the perfect place to enjoy your houseplants and Claire has some tips on how you can create your bathroom of dreams using plants. Claire says: “Humidity-loving plants are a wonderful way to add a zen vibe to your bathroom and give it a spa-like feel. Ferns do really well in bathrooms to inject a pop of vibrancy and will absorb the humidity from the air. Trailing plants like the String of hearts and Ivy also look great, especially when styled on a shelf or hanging from your shower to add drama and interest.
“To add a tropical vibe to your bathroom, the Spathiphyllum, or Peace Lily, and Areca Palms are a wonderful choice and will thrive in this environment. If you have a compact bathroom, grouping small Pothos plants on a windowsill or stool can still make an impact without sacrificing too much space.
“To really amp up the relaxing spa ambience, pair your plants with candles and your favourite houseplant mister for an elegant look that will transport you to an oasis of calm.”
If you’re looking to style large houseplants and give them a new lease of life, Claire says: “Larger plants are wonderful for filling empty floor space and helping you create a beautiful leafy jungle effect in your lounge or hallway. Plants like the Ficus, Calathea and Aglaonema will add a unique touch to your interiors with their gorgeous tones, and they tolerate low light, making them the perfect choice for livening up shady spots. To make the most of your larger plants, cluster together different colours, and raise them up on tables or stools for added height and dimension. Groups of three work well to create a visually striking display, and you can have fun with pots that complement your home.”
When it comes to the benefits of houseplants, Claire notes: “Tending to houseplants is a proven mood booster and can improve mental health, particularly during the darker winter months. This year, why not set up a dedicated houseplant care station in your home and enjoy moments of calm throughout the day? Whether you choose air purifying varieties like the Spathiphyllum, which will filter the air in your home and remove toxins, or flowering options like Orchids that add bursts of colour throughout the year, there are plenty of great perks to be enjoyed from welcoming houseplants inside.”
